That's Bjork on the cover, and she gets a nice feature inside this issue – as do the Penguin Cafe Orchestra, really presented with some great attention to detail and the way they arrived at their very unique sound! There's also a photo essay of a performance by Be Your Own Pet, a very long Gen-X graphic memoir by Marcellus Hall, the debut album of Wayne Phoenix, the two-wheeled skills of Chelsea Wolfe, the electronics of Pauline Anna Strom, the compositions of Annea Lockwood, and lots lots more – all presented with the crisp crackle that makes Maggot Brain so great! A really beautiful album from keyboardist Ray Angry – a set that not only sparkles from his own great work on Hammond, piano, and Fender Rhodes – but also from a killer quintet that includes Derrick Hodge on bass, Eric Harland on drums, Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet, and Myron Waldon on a variety of saxes! If you're a fan of any of the players in the mix, you'll find plenty here to love – and in fact, it's almost as if the album gives each of them the hippest sort of setting that they've had in awhile, maybe even more than on their own albums as leaders – as there's this magical sense of flow that has the notes and rhythms cascading about in really fresh directions. Ray wrote most of the titles – and tunes include "Bjork City", "Number One Love", "Bleeding Heart", "Circles INside You", "Gamma Ray", "Jake-Ism", and "It Might Be Gold". LP, Vinyl record album
The record that gave most of the world their first taste of Bjork – titles include "Birthday", "Deus", "Sick For Toys", "Delicious Demon", "Traitor", "Cold Sweat", and "Blue Eyed Pop". CD

A rare album from American bassist Tommy Potter – a session recorded in Stockholm in 1956, and originally only issued briefly in the US on Atlantic's short-lived East-West jazz subsidiary! The album's got a hard-edged feel that's quite different than most other Swedish jazz of the time – less of the cool notes the Swedes had picked up from the west coast scene and American modernists of the 50s – and more of the gritty, bottom-grooving styles that were coming into the US mix as hardbop started to give birth to soul jazz. Potter's bass is firmly at the lead on most numbers – and other players include Rolf Ericson on trumpet, Ake Persson on trombone, and Gunnar Hacke Bjorksten and Erik Norstrom on tenor – plus rhythm from Freddie Redd on piano and Joe Harris on drums. Tracks include "Punsch", "Russ & Arlene", "Reets & I", "The Imp", and "TNT". CD
Scorch Trio is Raoul Bjorkenheim on electric guitar and viola, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten on electric bass and electronics, and Paal Nilssen-Love on drums and percussion. CD
