One of the greatest albums ever from trombonist Roswell Rudd – an early Impulse Records session, cut right at a time when Rudd was a crucial part of the New York "new thing" scene in the 60s! The album's almost more of an ESP session from its lineup – which includes Giuseppi Logan on flute and bass clarinet, Robin Kenyatta on alto sax, Charlie Haden and Lewis Worrell on bass, and Beaver Harris on drums – yet the overall feel of the record has more of the control and sense of vision we've come to love on Impulse – the mix of structure and freedom you might find in crucial 60s recordings by Marion Brown or Archie Shepp on the label – particularly the latter's Fire Music generation! Titles include "Respects", "Satan's Dance", "Everywhere", and "Yankee No How". (Orange and black label stereo pressing. Vinyl plays with a short click on side 1, track 1.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Magic & Movement
Impulse, 1973. Very Good+ Gatefold
Excellent work by Klemmer – filled with the kind of fire and emotion that you don't get on many of his other records! The set was recorded live at two different venues – and it's a choppy slightly-funky batch of modal soul jazz tunes, with an approach that makes it feel like a lost ... LP, Vinyl record album

The famous 50s team of JJ Johnson and Kai Winding are reunited strongly here – after working alone for several years on their own projects! The groove here is a bit more open and less arranged than some of the pair's earlier projects – mostly just two trombones in the lead, soloing ... LP, Vinyl record album

A very groovy record – one of the most unique from trumpeter Clark Terry! At the end of the 60s, many soul jazz sax players – like Eddie Harris and Lou Donaldson – turned towards the new electric technology of the Varitone company in an attempt to keep up with the electric guitar- ... This Rather Than That
Impulse, 1969. Very Good Gatefold
Probably the best of Buddy's solo albums, with a tight little group that features Mel Rhyne, Jodie Christian, and his brother Monk – all coming together in a messed up style of funky jazz! Classic spiritual soul jazz from Pharoah – recorded with an all star lineup that includes Lonnie Liston Smith, Cecil McBee, Roy Haynes, and Michael White. Jazz 'Round The World
Impulse, 1963. Very Good- Gatefold
Yusef Lateef explores a number of different world music rhythms on a mix of woodwind instruments that includes tenor, basoon, flute, oboe, and shanas. He's joined here by the great Richard Williams on trumpet, whose playing with Lateef is always excellent. The rest of the group's made up of some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Impulse, 1971. Very Good Gatefold
One of the great recordings that Yusef Lateef made when pianist Mike Nock was in his group. Nock, at this point, had a great rhythmic feel, and he gives Lateef's compositions a great modal sound that's similar to his work with the Three Out trio in Australia. Tracks include "Try Love", ... A very groooooovy set! This one has Gary working with his "& Co" ensemble – including here the 2 guitars of Barry Galbraith and Toots Thielemans, the fender bass of Bob Brookmeyer, and the trumpet work of Clark Terry and Joe Newman. The groove is jazzy Mexican – kind of ... LP, Vinyl record album

The best of Ronnie Laws' 70s material, plus a few new tracks as well – an album that definitely lives up to its Classic Masters title! The session's billed as "very personal treatments of great standards" – and it's a great twist on familiar material, all given the Thelonius touch!
