Quite an unusual record from singer Carol Stevens – a singer who often vocalizes wordlessly, in an eerie, haunting way that's really compelling! Carol's got a breathy voice, and if she was singing the words, she'd no doubt come off as a bit of a sexpot – but here, working with arrangements from Phil Moore, her approach is much more fluid and evocative – kind of a tuneful humming that's really not scatting, and more just melodic vocalizations alongside the instrumental backing. The approach is similar to one used by Moore on some of his more ambitious exotic albums of the 50s – but here, it's nicely restrained and a fair bit jazzy – really great overall, and almost with a late nite, barroom sort of feel. Instrumentation features nice work from Herbie Mann on flute, Barry Galbraith on guitar, and Don Elliott on trumpet – plus a bit of piano from Moore. Titles include "Mood For You", "Lurelei", "At Last", "Tender As A Rose", "Romance In The Dark", "Lying In The Hay", and "I'm Playing With Fire".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Don't Let Go
MCA/Blue Thumb (Japan), 1974. New Copy
Tight funky jazz from vocalist Ben Sidran – still very much in his best early mode, and playing with a really raw sound overall! Ben's vocals are in that down-home Mose Allison mode, but the real charm is the music – which features funky drums by Clyde Stubblefield, the man responsible ... CD

Come Back To Me Love
Mack Avenue, 2014. New Copy
Lovely late work from Freda Payne! Come Back To Me Love is a bit of a throwback to her jazzier 60s years – with a mix of larger scale swing oriented tunes, and more intimate strings and piano backed ballads. It's a welcome move! The album is a win on all fronts. Her voice remains ... CD

Singin Ornette
Blue Serge (Italy), 2013. New Copy
A wonderful idea for a jazz vocal album – a set based entirely around the compositions of Ornette Coleman, served up at a level that respects all the complexity of the originals! Given Coleman's highly idiosyncratic approach, it's hard to imagine a singer finding his tunes easy to work with ... CD
