Sublime work from pianist Spike Wilner – a player who's really becoming one of our favorite contemporary talents these days! We've really grown to love Spike for his work on the Live At Smalls series – both for his tireless energy as one of the best live jazz engineers around, and for his key contributions to a few of the sets – and on this non-Smalls trio date, he's even more sparkling and vivid than ever – really opening up with his style, and letting us see a side of his talents we don't always catch on record. In addition to some of the older piano modes that Wilner's always been great at, he also steps out here with a bold, lyrical sensibility at times – one that's especially vivid on his original tunes – which are worth the price of admission alone, and reveal a great skill as a writer, especially for trio material. The rest of the group features Dezron Douglas on bass and Joey Saylor on drums – and titles include "Happy Ending", "La Tendresse", "Silver Cord", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "Le Sucrier Velours", and "If I Only Had A Brain". © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.
