One of the rarest early albums by Johnny Lytle – and a very tasty set of tracks that has a slightly different kick than usual. Johnny's regular trio with Milt Harris on organ and Peppy Hinant on drums is joined by Steve Cooper on bass and Ray Barretto on congas – which gives the tracks a fuller sound, and a nicely rolling groove from the conga. The vibes and organ still dominate strongly – which is ok by us – and the sound is opened past Johnny's regular stepping groove. Titles include a number of nice originals like "The House Of Winchester", "Moon Child", and "The Moor Man" – plus "Work Song" and "A Taste Of Honey".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Columbia, 1969. Very Good+ 2 LP Gatefold
One of the few cases in jazz where an oft-played classic still resonates with power! The record itself is a key cap to Miles Davis' already-groundbreaking years of the 60s – a bold step forward, not just for his nascent electric sound, but also for jazz in general – and the benchmark ... Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Spring Rain
Black Jazz, 1971. Near Mint-
One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
