Man At Work

LP (Item 61004) Cadet, 1959 — Condition: Very Good-
One of Kenny's nicely grooving sides for Chess – recorded live at the Village Vanguard in 1959, with a trio that features Richard Davis on bass and Roy Haynes on drums. Haynes' free touch on the kit really opens up the style of Kenny's playing – free, light, and lyrical, yet still quite soulful and filled with rhythm. Titles include "All Night Long", "Trio", "Will You Still Be Mine", "Soft Winds", and "Well You Needn't".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very Good - (minus)

  • Vinyl may be dirty, and can lack a fair amount of luster.
  • Vinyl can have a number of marks, either in clusters or smaller amounts, but deeper.
  • This is the kind of record that you'd buy to play, but not because it looked that great. Still, the flaws should be mostly cosmetic, with nothing too deep that would ruin the overall record.
  • Examples include a record that has been kept for a while in a cover without the paper sleeve, or heavily played by a previous owner and has some marks across the surface. The record should play okay, though probably with surface noise.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Tender Gender
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Straight, strong, and soulful sounds from guitarist Kenny Burrell – quite possibly one of his best albums of the 60s, thanks to a really well-focused sound throughout! Kenny Burrell

Ode To 52nd Street
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
A really wonderful Chess/Cadet session from the 60s – not the bop-styled record you might expect from the 52nd Street reference in the title! Instead, the whole thing's more of a cool Chicago take on soul jazz – with these great large arrangements from Richard Evans, backing strong ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Goin' Latin
Cadet, 1966. Very Good
Goin Latin, and goin groovy too – thanks to some wonderful arrangements from Chicago soul legend Richard Evans – who really helps Ramsey Lewis open up his sound on the set! The format's less straight Latin than you might expect from the title – and Evans brings in a bouncing, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ramsey Lewis

Wade In The Water
Cadet, 1966. Very Good+
Classic pop soul jazz from the inventor of the genre! King Fleming Trio

Weary Traveler
Cadet, 1965. Very Good-
One of three rare Chess Records sessions recorded by Chicago pianist King Fleming – a great player who was part of the same big generation and Ramsey Lewis and Ahmad Jamal – and was supposedly a big influence on the latter! Every one of Fleming's records are a bit different – and ... LP, Vinyl record album

John Klemmer

Involvement
Cadet, 1967. Near Mint-
Beautiful early work from John Klemmer – one of the most under-rated talents of his generation, and a great player who frequently gets overlooked because of his later, smoother work. Bunky Green

Playin' For Keeps
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
Tremendous work from an alto player with a very unique conception – a player who was unlike Charlie Parker, Sonny Stitt, or some of his precursors on the instrument – and instead really took off in bold new directions, like Lou Donaldson or fellow Chicagoan Sonny Cox in the mid 60s! ... Ramsey Lewis

Movie Album
Cadet, Mid 60s. Very Good+ Gatefold
Jazzy and classy – and one of the first of Ramsey's albums to feature him working with larger arrangements instead of the usual trio. In this case, the whole thing was arranged and conducted by Richard Evans – with a spacey hip sound that's not too far from some of Ramsey's later work ... LP, Vinyl record album

LP...$9.99 11.99
A very nicely selected 2LP set of tracks from Stitt's oft-overlooked years at Argo/Chess! Lou Donaldson

Rough House Blues
Cadet, 1964. Very Good+
One of Lou's more unique sides of the 60s – as the album features him as the main soloist over arrangements by a group headed up by Oliver Nelson. As has been ably demonstrated on many sides on labels like Verve, Impulse, and Capitol – there's no better talent than Nelson for taking a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Roland Kirk with Jack McDuff

Funk Underneath (aka Kirk's Work)
Prestige, 1966. Very Good+
A strange and tasty little album that Roland Kirk made with organist Jack McDuff in the early 60s – one of his few outings in such a format, and a smoking little session that almost makes us wish he'd cut more of them! The format is relatively simple – with lots of interplay between ... LP, Vinyl record album
