A set that shows that none of the group's imagination or talent had dimmed over the years – and the core quartet of John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums are joined by The New York Chamber Symphony, who are a small string-based group who slide in and out of the jazz-based grooves with an inventive range of colors and sounds! The album's hardly a "jazz with strings" sort of date – and instead, the strings are nicely integrated with a fluidly creative approach – in the mode of some of the more experimental string quartets that were showing up at the time. Titles include "Kansas City Breaks", "Three Windows", "Encounter In Cagnes", and the "Day In Dubrovnik" suite. (Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige, Early 50s. Very Good
Ah, the genius of the early Modern Jazz Quartet – summed up perfectly in two words: Kenny Clarke! At this early point in the group's history, Kenny was in the quartet on drums – and his magic touch on the kit makes for a style that's a bit harder, and a bit more swinging than some of ... A nice one! The MJQ record for the Beatles' label, and the record's one of their most interesting in years! A brilliant album through and through – not just a standout from the late 50s years of the Modern Jazz Quartet, but also a compelling soundtrack composed entirely by pianist John Lewis! Keith Jarrett's really pushing himself here – playing piano with some of the freewheeling qualities that would make him a huge new talent in the 70s, and also picking up some other instruments as well! A definite sweet return from Freddie Hubbard – a record with a cover and title that might appear to be smooth jazz, but one with a sound that's solidly acoustic and soulful all the way through!
