A set that shows that none of the group's imagination or talent had dimmed over the years – and the core quartet of John Lewis on piano, Milt Jackson on vibes, Percy Heath on bass, and Connie Kay on drums are joined by The New York Chamber Symphony, who are a small string-based group who slide in and out of the jazz-based grooves with an inventive range of colors and sounds! The album's hardly a "jazz with strings" sort of date – and instead, the strings are nicely integrated with a fluidly creative approach – in the mode of some of the more experimental string quartets that were showing up at the time. Titles include "Kansas City Breaks", "Three Windows", "Encounter In Cagnes", and the "Day In Dubrovnik" suite. (Cover has a promo stamp, a cutout notch, some wear, a bit of pen on the back, and a piece of tape over the opening.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Do It Now!
Atlantic, 1967. Near Mint-
Tight funky instrumentals from Brother Jack McDuff – an Atlantic groover that's probably closer to his late 60s gems for Cadet Records than it is his earlier work for Prestige! The solos are shorter, but they're packed nicely around the rhythms – played by a combo that features a young ... LP, Vinyl record album
Wailing Dervishes
Atlantic, Mid 60s. Very Good-
One of the coolest albums ever from Herbie Mann – and a set that's definitely got the vibrant sound you'd expect from its title and cover! The set's a live one, and pretty open at times – and the great Rufus Harley joins Mann's group for one track – in a really mad mix of sounds ... LP, Vinyl record album
Colpix, 1964. Very Good
A rare American outing from British bandleader Laurie Johnson – an artist who's probably best known for his famous soundtrack work of the 60s, but who steps out here in a surprisingly nice instrumental mode! The style here is a bit like that of John Dankworth on some of his American records ... LP, Vinyl record album
