Contemporary charanga from Bongo-Logic – and a set that's got a crisp edge that goes even farther than older albums of this nature! The production is excellent – razor-sharp, yet never in a smooth way – just with a strong ear for the deft musical interplay between percussion, violin, and flute – all quick-stepping together with soaring lead vocals from singer Freddy Crespo! The great Art Webb handles all the flute – with the soulful undercurrents we've always loved in his music – and titles include "Cangui Compay!", "Si Tu Quieres", "Charanga Rama", "El Congo Colonial", and "Cha-Rhumba Sabroso".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Acid Symposium, 1972. New Copy
An insanely wonderful bit of Latin funk! The groove is super heavy, and falls somewhere in between NuYorican soul and Chicano Power rock – with a sound that's pretty close to Black Sugar, but a little bit more psychedelic, due to the heavy guitars and keyboards in the grooves. Hard congas ... CD

Some of the best recent Latin Jazz around – all tied up in one slick package by those crafty folks at Cubop! In a world of silly "fake" Latin remake projects, Cubop's delivered some of the best straight Latin around – taking older giants and getting them back in the studio, ... CD

Classic Cuban jazz material from the group of trumpeter Rolando Aquilo – done in a style that's a bit tighter than some of the other Jam Session albums from the time, but still plenty darn great! Rolando's trumpet is firmly in the lead on most tracks, but the overall presentation is still ... CD

A stone classic from Switch – one of Motown's leading hopes in the early 80s soul scene, and for good reason too! These guys have a wonderfully well-rounded approach – great on ballads and even more compelling on groovers – a balance here that puts them proudly in the company of ... CD

A surprisingly great album from these two former member of The Supremes – Scherrie Payne & Susaye Greene-Brown – put together with production help from Eugene McDaniels, who really helps give the whole thing a hipper spin than some of the girls' more famous work from before! There's ... CD

Another stone winner from Rick James' early 80s run for Motown – a set that follows strongly on territory opened up by previous records – especially that bass-heavy approach to funk! The record's maybe not as stone classic as others, but still is way tighter and more put-together than ... CD

Seminal sounds from this great Detroit group – and a key look at their less-remembered music of the 60s! Although Fantastic Four are probably best remembered for their later disco work – including the Alvin Stone album on Westbound – back in their early days, they were a great ... CD

Motown/Universal (Japan), 1981. New Copy
Great group soul from the early 80s Motown years – a stellar set from Michael Smith and the Lovesmith group – the quartet he sung with before moving on as a solo act with the group's name in place of his own surname! Michael previously worked in The Smith Connection group in the 70s, ... CD
Throwin' Down
Gordy (Japan), 1982. New Copy
Rick James is massively throwing down on this classic set – tight, right, and on the money all the way through – in that trademark groove that so many others would try to cop, but never get this right! The album bristles with energy right from the start – lots of bass at the ... CD
