A great one from Roscoe Mitchell – one of his excellent solo sets from that great 70s stretch when he was really opening up his sound – trying out all sorts of new tones, textures, and elements in a very unfettered space! The feel here is similar to Mitchell's Sackville solo album – really incredible in the way he moves between different shadings and emotions, with a sense of creative exploration that's gone onto influence decades of horn players since! Roscoe plays soprano, alto, and baritone – and titles include "Encore", "Dance Two", "Cards For Alto", and "Circle 3".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Very spare sounds from Roscoe Mitchell and drummer Tyshawn Sorey, but still very sharp-edged too – and in a way, a mix of deeper thoughts and spontaneous energy that reminds us a lot of some of the more "out there" moments of the Art Ensemble back in the 70s! Roscoe's reeds have ... CD

Modernist clarinet at its best – handled deftly by Peter Kuhn, in a range of modes that moves between hard-swinging jazz and much more spacious, sonic textures! Kuhn plays both standard and bass clarinet – using the latter with an especially great sound that reminds us of some of the ... CD

Mercury/Solaris, 1976. New Copy
One of the most spiritual, soulful albums ever from the great Charles Earland – a set that's almost his answer to the keyboard styles of Lonnie Liston Smith in the 70s – and done with a very spiritual vibe! We love Earland on Hammond – but here he also plays Fender Rhodes, ... CD

Wonderfully complicated reed lines from the team of Dave Rempis on alto and Larry Ochs on tenor and sopranino sax – augmented here by trumpeter Darren Johnson, whose instrumental tones are a perfect fit for the record! The style of the set's a bit like some of Ochs' early material with Rova ... CD

Although recorded early in the career of Muhal Richard Abrams, this brilliant LP shows the pianist/composer turning away from the stock jazz and studio work of earlier years – to develop into one of the richest talents to rise from the Chicago avant underground of the 60s! At the time of the ... CD

One of those rare treasures that was recorded by Blue Note in the 60s, but not issued at the time – a great late Hank Mobley set from 1967 that only saw the light of day in 1980! The album's got Hank really opening things up – using some of those more inventive rhythms and articulate ... CD

Not the Perez Prado of "King Of Mambo" fame, but actually his younger brother Pantaleon Perez Prado – working in a grittier early 70s Latin Funk mode than the more famous elder Perez! This Perez Prado plays bongos and congas – keeping a nicely thumping Latin beat underneath ... CD

Rare underground sounds from Germany in the 80s – unique 4-track home recordings that are low-fi and fringe-y, but also oddly tuneful and compelling! You can pretty much discard any preconceived notions of what you might expect from 80s underground Germany – there's hardly a strobe-lit ... CD
