A lost west coast gem from the 50s – a unique quintet session for Atlantic Records, cut by a group co-led by trumpeter Conte Candoli and pianist Lou Levy! There's a bit more fire here than in some of the other sides from the time by the players – especially Levy – and in a way, the record goes a bit farther past the limits of Candoli's Bethlehem sessions, showcasing an especially searing sound in his horn! Other players here include the great Bill Holman on tenor, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Lawrence Marable on drums – and titles are all hard and short, and include "Marcia Lee", "Pete's Alibi", "Jordu", "Cheremoya", and "Comes Love".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Warner (Japan), 1986. New Copy
Laidback 80s work from guitarist David T Walker – a set that's a bit more moody than some of Walker's smoother albums from the 70s – and which is produced with an unusually sensitive touch! Many numbers begin with long, introspective passages from David on the guitar – slowly ... CD

With A Smile
Baked Potato/Warner (Japan), 1987. New Copy
David T Walker brings it in with a smile – working with his Warm Heart group that features keyboards from Jerry Peters and drums from James Gadson! The sound's a bit smoother than Walker's work of the 70s, but still plenty darn nice – thanks to that sly, subtle rasp that David always ... CD

A standout classic from Gary Burton – the kind of fresh-voiced and angularly modern session that showed why his sound on the vibes was one of the most revolutionary in jazz at the time! The session features a quartet with Larry Coryell on guitar, Steve Swallow on bass, and Bob Moses on drums ... CD

A record as evocative as its title – part of a great flowering of talent from Japanese reedman Sadao Watanabe at the end of the 60s! Sadao started his career out as a hell of a bopper, then moved into some sweet Brazilian modes in the 60s – but by the time of this record, he was really ... CD

Herbie Mann hits the discos – but given the flute player's roots in jazz, the set's more of an electric funk outing overall! Herbie's working here with his Family of Mann group – that cool combo that features lots of work on keyboards from Pat Rebillot, who also handled the ... CD

Damn great work from the amazing Eddie Harris – a record that's got a perfect blend of jazz and funk, but still holds onto more righteous elements too! Eddie's using his electric sax in a really great way – not as a gimmick at all, but as a way of linking both the soulful and ... CD

A sweet set of solo fusion from drummer Danny Gottlieb – formerly with Pat Metheny's group – and feel that's definitely in character with some of Methany's work from the period. Gottlieb is working here in the company of guitarist John Abercrombie and a number of cuts, and Joe Satriani ... CD

A wonderful 70s set from Herbie Mann – and one that features some heavy help from P&P maestro Patrick Adams! The album's more of an Adams-directed affair than the usual Herbie set – as Adams produced and arranged all the tracks, and really takes Mann in the direction of a hip late ... CD
