Incredible late work from the great West African dance band Vis-A-Vis – a brilliant set from 1977 that demonstrates good and well why the band were so greatly in demand both live and in the studio! The group had spent quite a bit of time backing the great Ghanaian singer K. Frimpong in the mid-to-late 70s, sometimes billed as the Cubano Fiestas, but as you're hear on this great set, they're just as great out on their own. They show a pretty amazing range – with a raw, yet dexterous African funk sound on some numbers and the entwining melodies of high life on others. The 12-piece group features a trio of vocalists led by "Superstar" Isaac Yeboah, plus Anthony Yeboah and Ayim Bediako, with Sammy Cropper on guitar, Slim Mau on bass, drummer Gybson "Shaolin Kung-Fu" Papra, George Asante on conga, Tonny Dozis on keys and synth, Kofi Abrokwaa on tenor sax, Paul Winter on trumpet, Daniel Asare on maracas and Alex Jubin on cowbells. Includes "Obi Agye Me Dofo", "Kankyema", "Gyae Su", "Gladys Mmbobor" and "Susan Suo". (Numbered limited edition. LP comes with the code for full digital download version.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Secret Stash, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A weird little record from the Nigerian scene of the 70s – much more laidback than you might expect, and a set with a definite Jamaican influence too! At times, some of these tracks are almost more reggae than Afro Funk – although at other points, there's definitely the fierce energy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Super Djata De Bamako Vol 2 – Blue
Musique Mondiale/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1982. New Copy (reissue)
Stellar work from Zani Diabate and the Super Djata Band – a classic early 80s album by the combo, but one with a feel that's instantly timeless as well! The rhythms here are relatively spare, but very striking – usually these interweaving basslines and subtle percussive parts – ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ubuntu (Netherlands), 1930s/1940s/1950s. New Copy
A treasure trove of South African sounds from mid-century – served up here in a mix of modes that really gets at the complexity of the scene at the time! There's a lot more jazz at play here than in other African musical communities – often served up in small combo ways that mix in ... LP, Vinyl record album

L'Orchestre Sidi Yassa De Kays
Mali Kunkan/Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1977. New Copy (reissue)
The one and only album by Mali's Sidi Yassa De Kayes – a beautiful group who really transcend any easy labels or genre conventions! The style here is almost more personal than some of the other large ensembles in Mali at the time – as the feel is pretty raw and up-close throughout, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bar Konon Mousso Bar
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1978. New Copy (reissue)
An amazing groove from the legendary Amadou Balake – music that's got this tight focus that has everything coming down together right in the middle – from basslines to percussion to some mighty skittish guitar! The rhythmic lines here are even sharper than in other Afro Funk from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

No Discrimination
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1979. New Copy (reissue)
Tony Allen steps out onto his own – moving away from the Afrika 70 group who accompanied him on his first three solo albums – nicely cooking here into a whole new groove! The tracks are a bit shorter than the side-long jams of previous records, but no less funky – as Tony somehow ... LP, Vinyl record album

Jealousy
Kindred Spirits (Netherlands), 1975. New Copy (reissue)
The first of the legendary Tony Allen albums – and it's got a killer groove that's very similar to some of the best Fela work of the early 70s! Fela and his group (Afrika 70) are still working with Tony here, and Fela lays down some tenor and piano solos – but make no mistake, it's ... LP, Vinyl record album
