A treasure trove of classic work from Gerry Mulligan – all pulled from those mid 50s years when he was really hitting his stride! CD 1 features the full Volume 2 of the California Concerts album for Pacific Jazz – expanded to include the entire concert recorded in December of 1954 in San Diego. The group's a great one – and features Zoot Sims, Bob Brookmeyer, Larry Bunker, Red Mitchell, and Jon Eardley – on 9 titles that include I'll Remember April", "People Will Say We're In Love", "The Red Door", "Western Reunion", and "There Will Never Be Another You". CDs 2 and 3 bring together 3 complete Mercury albums by the Gerry Mulligan Sextet – as well as a number of bonus tracks too! The whopping set is a great document for this unique point in Mulligan's career – a time when he took things to the next level after his famous Pacific Jazz recordings, and improved upon his already groundbreaking style by complicating the horn parts even more! The lineup includes Jon Eardley and Don Ferrara on trumpets, Bob Brookmeyer on valve trombone, Zoot Sims on tenor sax, and rhythm by either Peck Morrison and Bill Crow on bass, as well as Dave Bailey on drums. Although players shift a bit throughout, there's a really unified feel to the work here – even when piano is let back into the group through the back door – played a bit by either Mulligan or Brookmeyer, but in a new way of phrasing – almost rhythm-less in the way it's included as an element. 2CD package features a whopping 28 tracks – including "Mud Bug", "Apple Core", "Bernie's Tune", "La Plus Que Lente", "Blues", "Demanton", "Elevation", "Mainstream", "Igloo", "Blues At The Roots", "Broadway", and "Lollypop".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Used CD Grade

We only use the grade "Used CD" for non-new CDs. This all-encompassing grade was chosen it because we only buy and offer used CDs in the best possible condition.

When you purchase a used CD you can expect the disc to be free of all but the lightest of surface marks, the case to be clean (we often change the cases ourselves), and the booklet to be in good shape. Used CDs may show some signs of use, but if there are significant details or defects we will describe the item's condition (just like we do with LPs), so look for notes on cutout marks, stickers, promo stamps or other details before ordering.

All of our used CDs are guaranteed to play without skipping or flaws. After you receive a used CD from Dusty Groove, you have 1 week to play it to determine that it plays correctly. If it does not, you can request a return for a full refund.

2 great Paris live sets from Gerry Mulligan – with his Concert Jazz Band at L'Olympia in 1960 – followed by a 1962 quartet set at the same venue serving as bonus tracks! The 11 titles on the first CD and the first titles on the second CD are culled from the 1960 set – a tight ... CD

A sweet little large group session from Gerry – a bit harder swinging than some of his mid 50s small group work, but still with that mellifluous glide that's the trademark Mulligan sound! Arrangements are by some great talnets – including Al Cohn, Johnny Mandel, and Bob Brookmeyer, who ... CD

Quartet – Russ Freeman & Chet Baker
Pacific Jazz, 1956. Used
A great no-nonsense session from Chet – blowing here with Russ Freeman on piano, blocking out backgrounds that work perfectly with the fragile tone of Chet's horn. The rest of the group is completed by Leroy Vinnegar on bass and Shelly Manne on drums – and the tracks are simple and ... CD

A rare slice of work by Roland Kirk from his early years – a great live set recorded in Europe in the mid 60's – done in a looser mode than his studio sessions from the time! Kirk's playing his usual array of incredible horns – tenor, stritch, flute, nose flute, and manzello ... CD

One of the best albums that Al Cohn and Zoot Sims ever cut together – and that's saying a lot, given the strength of their collaborations during the 50s and 60s! The set's got a nice small group feeling, and is a bit more open and relaxed than some of their RCA material – still in the ... CD
