Impressions — This Is My Country ... LP

The Impressions are wearing their politics much more on their sleeve at this point – what with a cover that shows them standing in the rubble of the ghetto, and a title that is both a bold proclamation of ownership, and a sad comment on the state of affairs. Curtis Mayfield's pen is in perfect form here, and the group hits that perfect mix of sweet soul and politics that make these late 60s efforts some of their (and Curtis') strongest work, with harmonies that far surpass the earlier years, and which still kind of make us wish that Curtis hadn't gone solo, because we just love the sound of his sweet raspy voice next to the deeper style of Fred Cash. The set's filled with great cuts like "This Is My Country", "Loves Happening", "Fool For You", and "Stay Close To Me".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Mind Of Gil Scott-Heron
Arista, 1978. New Copy (reissue)
A great little live album – one that's quite different than Gil Scott-Heron's double-length set for Arista – and a set that serves as a key bridge between his early protest work and his emerging vocal sensibility! The set features a fair bit of longer spoken passages – but unlike ... LP, Vinyl record album

A really great chapter in the long and funky history of the musicians that also played in Lafayette Afro Rock Band and Cane & Abel – and a cool little set that may be one of the best records to ever come from the collective! Incredible work from the obscure African Music Machine – a southern funk combo led by bassist Louis Villery – a legendary batch of funky singles, finally brought together as a full album! It's Just Begun
RCA, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
Wickedly fuzzy funk! Jimmy Castor recorded in a lot of different styles during the 70s – but the one he used on this album is still his best! The record's a non-stop guitar-heavy batch of classic funk tracks – and it features the storming break track "It's Just Begun", the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Man!
Curtom, 1974. New Copy (reissue)
A killer early album by the great Leroy Hutson! Hutson had originally been a later member of The Impressions – replacing Curtis Mayfield briefly after he'd gone solo – but he also had spent a fair bit of time noodling around the Chicago soul studio scene of the late 60s and early 70s. ... Hutson II
Curtom, 1976. New Copy (reissue)
One of our favorite soul albums ever – a complete masterpiece from the mighty Leroy Hutson, easily one of the greatest soul singers of the 70s! The album's got a warmth that's amazing, yet also still manages to groove all the way through – hitting a subtle, almost mellow vibe that's ... LP, Vinyl record album

Stag O Lee (Germany), Late 50s/Early 60s. New Copy
Plenty of great grinding here – a set of slow-stepping soul tunes, laidback R&B, and more – all with a great late 50s/early 60s sort of vibe! The music here follows strongly in the spirit of Little Willie John's "Fever" – with all the vamping slinky energy that ... LP, Vinyl record album

A set put together as the soundtrack for the James Brown bio-pic – but one that features mostly original recordings by The Godfather himself, and a few older cuts altered a bit for the film! A really tremendous album from the legendary Gil Scott-Heron – and a set that stands as one of his greatest statements from the 70s! Sam Dees was one of the greatest unsung talents in 70s soul music – an important writer, arranger, and general background talent who helped so many other singers hit the heights – but who hardly ever issued much work under his own name! Quite possibly the most successful record Otis Clay ever cut – and a wonderful little set that recasts his bluesy Chicago vocals with a sweeter Memphis soul approach!
