A rare session of solo piano from Lou Levy – quite an unusual format for any jazz musician at the time, and a set that has Levy sounding a lot more modern than on other dates recorded in the 50s! Lou really takes advantage of the setting here – and opens up with these unusual tones, timings, and colors – blocking things out in completely different ways than his trio dates, or his performances with larger groups – really making us amazed at the complexity in his work! Things are still relatively inside – but Levy's takes on the tunes almost show Tristano tendencies at times – or an Elmo Hope-like sense of play with familiar themes. Titles include "Get Happy", "Black Coffee", "Lullaby Of The Leaves", "Violets For Your Furs", "Cheek To Cheek", and "I'll Take Romance". © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
