The Cotillion era of smooth bass-heavy funk is firmly in place with the release of this one – an ensemble funk outing with perhaps a few too many members in the ensemble! As is usually the case with such a record, the cuts that work best are the mellow numbers – like "Our Thought (Purity)", "With Pleasure", and "Next Year", all of which groove along at a slow pace with a nice mellow soul feel. Other tracks include "Love You", "Firecracker", and "Can't You See I'm Fired Up". The only exception is the great cut "Strollin" – which is a jazzy instrumental with trumpet and vibes, really working together in a tightly jamming groove!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Show Time
Cotillion, 1981. Very Good+
Wonderful work from Slave – an album that's still got the hard funk of earlier years, yet which also has the group sweetening up their sound in a great sort of 80s groove way! Most tracks kick along with that great rolling bass sound that the group practically invented – and which has ... LP, Vinyl record album

Born Again
Cotillion, 1971. Near Mint- Gatefold
A sophisticated batch of jazzy tracks that really opens the group's style up way way past the stock form of some of their Brunswick recordings. The band's clearly taken on a more spiritual bent for this one – as you can probably guess from the Afro-madonna cover – and the music ranges ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Keep Coming Back For More
Chocolate City, 1977. Very Good+
Sublime second generation soul from Brenda & The Tabulations – a sweet set of Philly grooves, recorded at Sigma sound with help from Norman Harris, Bobby Eli, and John Davis! The album's every bit as groove-heavy as you'd expect from work by those dancefloor heavyweights – and the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Music Of The Sun
Tabu, 1978. Very Good
A soaring solo moment for Lamont Johnson – the bassist whose work was a big part of the Brainstorm ensemble at their start – and who really makes some great magic here on his own! It's clear from the set that Johnson was one of the more spiritual members of Brainstorm – as the ... LP, Vinyl record album
