A rare rare jam from Willie Bobo – a lively little set with a really mod groove! This pre-Verve album has Willie working in a variety of styles – from straight Latin jazz to a mode that's got some groovier 60s touches – emphasized by a bit of electric guitar on a few numbers, and by snapping dancefloor rhythms on a few of the others. Tracks are all short and hard, with a groove that's quite different than the Latin soul styles of Willie's more famous work for Verve. The group's not named in the notes, but there's some pretty nice sax work on a few of the cuts – as well as plenty of that great guitar! Titles include "Twist The Monkey's Tail", "Get Crackin", "The Hip Monkey", "Timbale Groove", "Go Go Go", "Be's The Other Way", and "Ala Bobo".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Ralfi
Fania, Early 70s. New Copy (reissue)
Sublime falsetto soul from the great Ralfi Pagan – one of the most unique artists on the New York Latin scene at the start of the 70s! Ralfi shares some of the sweet soul modes of Joe Bataan – when Joe's in the right mood – but he also goes further, too – and really pushes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Lenni Sesar
Fania, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)
A lost slammer from the Fania catalog of the 60s – the one and only album from the highly dynamic Lenni Sesar! Lenni's got a sound that's quite different from other Latin leaders of his time – very jazzy overall, especially on the uptempo numbers on the set – with a really full ... LP, Vinyl record album

Melaza
Chulo, 2014. New Copy
A crack salsa combo from New York – contemporary, but with a very old school vibe – and a really rich sense of arrangement! The group's got two trombones and two trumpets – but arrangements are by pianist Mike Eckroth, who's got a really broad sense of color – and uses the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Camel Walk
Fania, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)
Killer Latin soul! This record is one of the hardest to find from the late 60's boogaloo era, and it's a massive stormer filled with tasty grooves! The band is small and tight, with a 2-sax frontline, for an extra-soulful sound. Vocals are in English and Spanish, and the album wails away like a ... LP, Vinyl record album

In Line/En Linia
Fania, 1969. New Copy (reissue)
A killer bit of Latin Soul – one of the few albums ever recorded by conga player George Guzman, working here with a very cool, very hip, late 60s ensemble! The group sport 3 trumpets, piano, bass, and some very strong percussion – plus vocals in both English and Spanish, which makes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hey Sister
Fania, Late 60s. New Copy (reissue)
Oooooo-weee – a monster album by one of our favorite talents of the Latin soul era! Monguito Santamaria had a really great way of putting the electric bass right up front in his tracks – kicking things up with a bouncing groove that's as sock-boogaloo as boogaloo can get, and which ... Message
Fania, 1972. New Copy (reissue)
One of Ray Barretto's hardest-hitting salsa albums of the 70s – a raw set of grooves that's got Ray moving away from the playfulness of the Latin Soul years, into a more righteous mode that's easily guessed at from the title of the set! The vibe here is very straightforward – with Ray ... LP, Vinyl record album

Folklords
Delmark, 2014. New Copy
One of the trippiest albums we've heard from Delmark in recent years – a really creative session from bassist Jason Ajemian, and one that links the label's avant jazz work to some of the deeper sides of Chicago's indie scene! Ajemian is free to work without any sense of genre or convention ... LP, Vinyl record album
