Fania All-Stars — Rhythm Machine ... CD 12.99

One of the proudest moments of the New York Latin underground – a time when some of its best players wound up playing for Columbia, through a brief affiliation between Fania and the larger label! And although you might think that the album would totally sell out the group's best points, it's actually a great batch of cuts that mixes the All-Stars' strong salsa and jazz grooves with some nice club-oriented rhythms – a blend that was perfect to show the growing sophistication of the Nuyorican scene in the late 70s! All the right touches are still strongly in place – and the record features work from Pacheco, Roberto Roena, Mongo Santamaria, and Louie Ramirez, as well as guests Bob James and Eric Gale. Titles include "En Orbita", "Awake", "Juan Pachanga", "Steady", "Jubileo", and "Ella Fue". (White label promo. Cover has some wear, a small split on the spine, a tracklist sticker, and a bit of sticker residue, with a one by two inch corner portion cut out of the back.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prestige, 1965. Very Good-
An excellent set of groovy Latin-tinged tunes – and one of the rarest records on Prestige from the 60s! The set's one of the few ever recorded under the name of Montego Joe – a great conga player who's probably best remembered for his work with the Har-You Percussion Ensemble, but who ... Essential female Philly soul recorded by the Jones Girls, a group who came to Philly later than many of their big 70s acts, but who went onto become possibly the best female act who recorded with Gamble & Huff. Heavenly mystical soul from Rotary Connection! If you know the group, you know the deal already: Minnie Riperton sings vocals on a number of cuts, and the great Charles Stepney's producing and arranging, with a super-baroque style that's still light years ahead of most producers in pop!
