A fantastic album by Paul Bley, and very different than anything else he ever did! The sound is cool and modal, not sharp and angular – a groove that's a wonderful blend of Bley's young modernism with the west coast scene in which the album was recorded – but all with a vibe that's a bit different than most of what was coming out of LA during the 50s! In addition to Bley's piano, the group's got an amazing asset in the vibes of Dave Pike – working here with a lean early sound that's a great match for Paul's sounds on the keys. The rest of the group is great too – with Charlie Haden on bass and Lennie McBrowne on drums – both players with a strong sense of rhythm that really helps flavor the record. Titles include "I Remember Harlem", "Persian Village", "O Plus One", "Solemn Meditation", "Everywhere", "Beau Diddley", and "Drum Two". (Heavy original pressing, with white label and deep groove!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

One of the few albums ever cut by reedman Rudolph Johnson – a hell of a saxophonist, and one with a great ability to combine the spiritual with the searing – a bit like Joe Farrell at his CTI best, but not as freewheeling – nicely focused, and a little bit funky in all the right ...
