❔
Sweet funky jazz from Grover Washington – an early standout session from his classic years on Kudu Records, put together with hip arrangements from the mighty Bob James! The record's got the same spacious sense of grooving as James' first few for CTI – a style that's funky fusion, but a bit more laidback than most – not nearly as jamming, and with almost as much focus on lean rhythms as on key solos from the players in the group! Most tracks have a long, open sort of feel – and in addition to alto and tenor from Grover, other instrumentation includes organ from Richard Tee, guitar from Eric Gale, drums from Idris Muhammad, percussion from Airto, and electric piano from Bob James himself. Titles include versions of "Mercy Mercy Me", "Ain't No Sunshine/Theme From Man & Boy", "Until It's Time For You To Go", and "Inner City Blues".  © 1996-2024, Dusty Groove, Inc.
(Original pressing with Van Gelder stamp. Includes the Kudu inner sleeve. Cover has some surface and edge wear, splitting in the spine, and a small Motown sticker in back.)

Very Good

  • Vinyl can have some dirt, but nothing major.
  • May not shine under light, but should still be pretty clean, and not too dirty.
  • May have a number of marks (5 to 10 at most), and obvious signs of play, but never a big cluster of them, or any major mark that would be very deep. Most marks should still not click under a fingernail.
  • May not look near perfect, but should play fairly well, with slight surface noise, and the occasional click in part of a song, but never throughout a whole song or more.
  • This is clearly a copy that was played by someone a number of times, but which could also be a good "play copy" for someone new.

Additional Marks & Notes

If something is noteworthy, we try to note it in the comments — especially if it is an oddity that is the only wrong thing about the record. This might include, but isn't limited to, warped records, tracks that skip, cover damage or wear as noted above, or strictly cosmetic flaws.

Best Is Yet To Come
Elektra, 1982. Very Good+
A set that strongly continues the special spirit that Grover Washington brought to his music during the Elektra Records years – as one of the few artists who really found a way to move forward from the style of 70s jazz funk, but not fall into some of the smoother jazz cliches that were about ... Idris Muhammad

Boogie To The Top
Kudu, 1977. Very Good+
Classic middle period work from drummer Idris Muhammad – a set recorded after his initial run of lean funk recordings for the jazz scene – with a bit more soul in the mix, and definitely a bit of boogie in the groove! Arrangements are by David Matthews – the maestro of the soul-st ... LP, Vinyl record album

David Matthews

Shoogie Wanna Boogie
Kudu, 1976. Near Mint-
One of the slickest of Dave Matthews' funk records from the 70s – but still pretty darn nice! Matthews was the mainman behind the legendary funk group The Grodeck Whipperjenny, and a key arranger in James Brown's sound of the Polydor years – but by this time, he moved into smoother ... Joe Beck

Beck
Kudu, 1975. Very Good+
A great little Kudu set from guitarist Joe Beck – a player who's sounding a lot tighter here than some of his odd psychedelic experiments of the 60s – but still pretty darn great overall! The style is smooth, as you'd expect from Kudu, but Joe's still got plenty of edges in his guitar ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bob James

One
CTI, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A landmark album – not only for Bob James, but for CTI and the Fender Rhodes as well! This is the album where all the magic starts – the first of many extremely successful albums that Bob recorded during the 70s under his own name, and almost the birthplace of the modern hip hop ... Sonny Criss

Jazz USA
Imperial, 1956. Near Mint-
One of Sonny Criss' classic albums for Imperial – a brilliant batch of LA bop from the 50s, with an impeccable sound throughout! Weather Report

Mysterious Traveller
Columbia, 1974. Sealed
A new sense of focus in the Weather Report sound – that building, soaring groove that would become the group's trademark in the mid 70s – offered up here in one of it's first and finest examples! The approach is one to describe accurately on paper – but which is instantly ... LP, Vinyl record album

Miles Davis

ESP
Columbia, 1965. Very Good+
An album of dark and subtle beauty – and still one of our favorite Miles Davis albums of all time! The set's not as earth-shattering as some of Davis' other work of the 60s, but that's why we like it so much – because the emerging genius of the group with Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, ... Mosaic, Early 50s. Near Mint- 4LP Box Set
The trumpet of Chet Baker was hard pressed to find a better accompanist than the piano of Russ Freeman – and the pair made some incredible recordings during Baker's early years at Pacific Jazz. Ronnie Foster

Delight
Columbia, 1978. Very Good+
A definite delight from Ronnie Foster – a post-Blue Note set that actually has the keyboardist sounding better than ever! Laurindo Almeida

Acapulco 22
Tower, Late 60s. Sealed
Excellent work from guitarist Laurindo Almeida – a truly wonderful album, played with small combo backing, which gives the set a jazzier feel than usual! Wild Tchoupitoulas

Wild Tchoupitoulas
Island, 1976. Near Mint-
A great slice of New Orleans soul from the 70s – a record that replicates the "Indian" culture in the Mardi Gras scene – and which is most notable for featuring work by The Meters as well! The groove here is kind of Meters-styled funk, mixed with some fuller New Orleans mode ... LP, Vinyl record album
