A brilliant pairing of two of our favorite European jazz musicians from the 60s – a set that has the saxophone talents of Barney Wilen joining a cool Swedish group headed by trombonist Eje Thelin – in styles that are quite different than work we usually hear from either player! The material still has the modern qualities we'd expect from Thelin, and the well-crafted tenor moments we love from Wilen – but there's a richer sort of feel to the music that's quite surprising – arrangements that are thoughtful, but never overly complicated – and an inherent swing that really makes the album explode with bright, lively energy. The whole thing's tremendous – material that easily ranks right up there with the best vintage bits from either player – and the other players on the date include Lars Sjosten on piano, Erik Lundborg or Palle Danielsson on bass, and Rune Carlsson on drums – plus an added horn group on the first four numbers.
