One of the greatest groups in Mali during the 70s – a legendary ensemble with a really other-worldly sound! Super Biton De Segou have a way of folding together their horns with their grooves that's really mindblowing – taking all the sharp edges and exotic flavors of the reeds, and having them step in line beautifully with the haunting rhythms of the tunes – often very elliptical and hypnotic, with a quality that's not unlike some of the Ethio grooves of the time – but definitely with the rootsier feel you'd expect in music from Mali! Vocals are every bit as well integrated as the horns – and titles include "So Karafe", "Siseni", "Malamini", "Nyangaran Foli", "Yere Jabo", "Alioune Sissoko", and "Taasi Doni".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Our favorite album ever from Tyrone Davis – even if it's completely different than most of his other work too! The set's got a wonderfully smooth feel right from the start – a mellow-grooving, slow-stepping approach that works perfectly for Tyrone's wonderful vocals – pushing ... CD

The brain trust of soul jazz in the early 60s – led by tenorist Gene Ammons on both albums! Soul Summit Volume one features Ammons and Sonny Stitt on tenor, plus Jack McDuff on Hammond – a definite soul summit for the time – with 3 top-shelf players in the lead, all getting ... CD

Bouncy, beat-heavy soul from Five Star – really stepping out strongly on this self-titled set! The music's nothing new, and very familiar to fans of mainstream soul at the time – but the group really serve things up with a stronger edge than on previous releases – handling much ... CD
