A set with the date of 1956 very firmly planted in the title – but one that's also gone onto become a timeless ensemble session from Verve Records! The feel here is almost in jam session mode, but perhaps a bit tighter – a group of all-star players from the mid-50s, with Lester Young on tenor, Roy Eldridge on trumpet, Vic Dickenson on trombone, Teddy Wilson on piano, and Freddie Green on guitar – a nice mix of generations and styles that really helps open up the sound of the record. Tracks are nice and long, taken in that open, solo-conscious Verve mode – and tunes include "I Guess I'll Have To Change My Plan", "This Year's Kisses", "You Can Depend On Me", and "I Didn't Know What Time It Was".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

You know, we've never been sure what they mean by "collates" in the title of this one – but we're guessing the title was chosen because of the way Johnny blows sheets and sheets of sweet sound together on alto sax! The recordings are in an Ellington mode, but taken to a small group ... CD

Pure genius from Stan Getz – a set that's got an understated brilliance from the cover and title right down to the music in the grooves – and maybe one of the best-ever pairings of the tenor of Getz with the guitar of Jimmy Raney! The pair work here in a hip combo with Duke Jordan on ... CD

Moserobie (Sweden), 2013. New Copy
A brilliant bubble of sounds from IPA – much more searing than you'd guess from the album's title – served up here in a sharp brace of trumpet, tenor, and vibes! The group's overflowing with that modernist Moserobie label energy we love so much – tight in construction, but still ... CD
