This mid 60s set for Cadet finds Jamal and his trio, featuring Jamil Nasser on bass and Frank Gant on drums playing it cool despite the title – which is actually the Irving Berlin penned lead track. Other tracks include a rendition of Sonny Rollins' "St. Thomas", the latin-tinged "Misty", "April In Paris", "Allison", "Maybe September", and "The Girl Next Door". (Orange label pressing. Cover has some wear and a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Happy Moods
Argo, 1960. Very Good
A sprightly set from the Ahmad Jamal Trio – but also a record that's not as brightly colored as you might guess from the title, thanks to a nice undercurrent of darkness in the mix! Jamal's piano work is often nicely punctuated – perhaps living up to the "happy moods" ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, Late 60s. Very Good+
One of McDuff's fantastic Cadet LPs, and one that features the funky funky organist in a set of crazy arrangements written by him and Richard Evans. An amazing mix of McDuff's soul jazz organ sound with the genius that was the Chess/Cadet studio system of the late 60's – and one that yields ... LP, Vinyl record album

Gotta Travel On
Cadet, 1966. Near Mint-
A stone groover from the great Ray Bryant – one of his brilliant albums for Cadet from the 60s! Ray's soul jazz trio (with Freddie Waits on drums) is augmented by the 2-horn trumpet section he used on some of his other Cadet recordings from the time – trumpet from Snookie Young and ... Magnetic Feel
Cadet, 1975. Very Good-
One of the great funky electronic records recorded by McDuff for Cadet! Includes some excellent groovers with a tight loping funk feel – like "Blue Monsoon", "A Long Goodie", and a nice cover of "Don't Mess With Mister T". Jack plays moog and Fender Rhodes, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Verve, Mid 50s. Very Good
Slammin soundtrack to this bio-pic which starred Sal Mineo as Gene Krupa, and which features music by Krupa himself, plus Anita O'Day and Red Nichols. Pretty trad and swing all around – but there's a lot of great drum work by Krupa, particularly the type that often got featured in the live ... LP, Vinyl record album

While My Lady Sleeps
RCA, 1957. Very Good
A rare "with orchestra" outing from pianist Phineas Newborn – one that has his gentle keys out front of larger backings by Dennis Farnon – all cast in the kind of dreamy mode you might expect from the title! Yet while the whole thing's certainly got a late night feel, Newborn' ... LP, Vinyl record album
