Fantastic! A new jazz singer that really lights up our lives – and one that we'd instantly rank right up there with an elite few – vocalists like Carmen Lundy or Dee Dee Bridgewater! Zara McFarlane's not only an incredible singer with a deeply soulful approach to jazz – but she's also a hell of a songwriter too, and turns in many original tunes for the record – a rare accomplishment in jazz these days, when it seems like most folks are content to simply sing older nuggets. And Zara's tunes aren't poppy, or crossover material – but real jazz, put together beautifully with warm small combo backing – making the whole record feel like the kind of 70s jazz vocal session we're always digging for, but never manage to find! We've got a feeling we'll be hearing lots from McFarlane in years to come – but for now, this debut's more than enough – a real treasure that's definitely got us smiling brightly.
