Wickedly funky work from HP Riot – a legendary group from the San Francisco scene of the 70s, but one who never managed to break the big time! The HP groove is a very tight, joyous approach to funk – one schooled in the Sly & The Family stone sense of righteousness, but which also brings in the unbelievably tight instrumentation of early Kool & The Gang – especially on some of the bold horn passages that top off some of the tunes! There's a wealth of funky numbers on the set – of the sort that most other 70s groups would give their souls to record this well – and the record's one that's needed rediscovery for years! Titles include "Good Time (Party)", "The Dollar Sign", "Blame It On the Sun", "Gotta Go (The Chant)", and "Just Look Around The Corner". (Nice tip-on cover pressing, too – even better than usual for Luv N Haight!)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Not the band's first album – as you might think from the "start" in the title – but a classic batch of jazzy, funky, and soulful grooves from The Blackbyrds – one of those combos that few groups could match back in the 70s! The set's got a beautifully put-together feel ... LP, Vinyl record album

Totally great – and a record you probably know nothing about! The album's one of the greatest ever to come out of the Hotlanta scene of the 70s – a tight batch of funk tracks with a heck of a lot of guitar. The set was produced by Tommy Stewart, of "Bump and Hustle" fame ... LP, Vinyl record album

What Is It
BGP (UK), 1971. New Copy (reissue)
Quite possibly the best album ever from this fantastic funky combo! The band grooves hard and funky – with incredible drum work from Paul Stubblefield, tasty guitar from Walter Winston, and some famous funky flute and sax work from Gus Hawkins. Tracks on the album are rough and raw – ... LP, Vinyl record album
