CD (Item 612265) Argo (Japan), 1964 — Condition: New Copy

Illinois Jacquet's gutsy tenor sound is restrained a bit in this beautiful set of Cole Porter ballads, played with accompaniment by a small orchestra of woodwinds and strings – but the sound is great throughout, thanks to some wonderfully deep tones and great production! Benny Golson and Tom McIntosh did the arrangements, so the material's pretty hip – and Illinois does a great job of opening these tracks up in the same way that someone like Ike Quebec would – lustily blowing with a sense of tone and phrasing that makes even simple moments sparkle with understated brilliance! The album's an under-acknowledged Argo session, and one with a beautiful late night feel – tracks that include "I Love You", "Do I Love You", "Begin The Beguine", "Get Out Of Town", and "Everytime We Say Goodbye".  © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc.
