Cannonball Adderley — Phenix ... CD 10.99

Sweet funky 70s work from Cannonball Adderley – a record that has him revisiting older tunes from his early soul jazz years – but in ways that give them a whole new electric vibe overall! The album's actually Cannonball's last full studio set, but it's also one of his greatest too – a very hip little record that features arrangements that are slightly bigger than before – almost a CTI sort of mode, with a similar CTI sense of space, sound, and timing! There's some great keyboards on the set – courtesy of George Duke and Mike Wolff – and other players include Nat Adderley on cornet, Airto on percussion, Sam Jones and Walter Booker on bass, and Louis Hayes and Roy McCurdy on drums. The keyboards lead off most numbers, but they're followed strongly by Cannon and Nat – both of whom open up wonderfully in the magical setting of the record! Titles include great new takes on "Sack O Woe", "Work Song", "Jive Samba", "74 Miles Away", "Walk Tall/Mercy Mercy Mercy", "Country Preacher", "Domination", and "This Here" – plus "Hi Fly" and "Hamba Nami".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Prophet
Kudu, 1972. Near Mint-
One of the best of Johnny Hammond's albums for Kudu! The arrangements are by Pee Wee Ellis – yes, THAT Pee Wee Ellis, the guy who played alto for James Brown! Ellis gives the record a slightly different feel than other Kudu arrangers (like Bob James) might have, and the usual slow building ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1961. Very Good-
This is volume 3 of Prestige's set of European recordings by Dolphy, some of the last he would make before he passed away at a very young age. The group features Swedish piano giant Bent Axen, plus a rhythm section that includes Erik Moseholm on bass and Jorn Elniff on drums. Like most Dolphy ... LP, Vinyl record album

Bossa Nova
Vee Jay, Early 60s. Very Good
Very nice, very tight little bossa nova set by Eddie Harris from his early days at Vee Jay! The groove is very open, and Eddie's still at the stage where he can really cut the stuff. His solos ring out hard and cold above some great Lalo Schifrin arrangements, and Lalo also plays piano on the ... LP, Vinyl record album
