Ben Sidran — I Lead A Life ... CD 13.99

Wonderful early work from Ben Sidran! The album's got a hip jazzy vocal style – similar to some of the best late 60s work by Bob Dorough or Dave Frishberg, but also with New Orleans touches – as in the work of Mose Allison or Dr John! Sidran brings in a smoother, groovier feel than those artists, though – and really helps out his vocals with some great work on electric piano too! The instrumentation's got a tripped-out California feel – often quite open-ended, and really rumbling around for different influences from jazz, funk, and soul – almost like some of Shuggie Otis' best work of the time, or like some of Ben's contemporaries on the Blue Thumb label. Titles include the great instrumental "Lust" – plus "Eliyahu", "When A Woman Says She's Ready", "Talking About Money", "I Lead A Life", "Slippery Hip", and "Chances Are". (Cover has a light stain on one corner.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Live At Montreux
Arista, 1978. Very Good+
Tightly funky work from Ben Sidran – arguably one of his best albums for Arista, thanks to a strong lineup of players, and the open-ended relaxed setting of Montreux! The tracks here are a bit longer than some of Ben's studio sides for the label at the time – and almost hearken back to ... LP, Vinyl record album

Free In America
Arista, 1976. Very Good
A bit smoother than Ben's earlier albums – but a great little set all the way through – and about as classic as you can get for Sidran in the 70s! The album's got a bit more soul in the mix, but still has some jazzy elements in the backings – and where things were sometimes ... LP, Vinyl record album

Blue Thumb, 1973. Very Good Gatefold
A mad bit of funk and jazz from Ben Sidran – much more tripped-out than his later work! Ben's got a great bunch of musicians on the album – with either Tony Williams or "funky drummer" Clyde Stubblefield on drums, and Phil Upchurch on bass, laying down a nice dark groove on ... Country, My Way
Reprise, Late 60s. Very Good
Country, Nancy's way – but fortunately that way includes some great help from Lee Hazlewood, who's working here at the height of his powers! The set's got that sly, sexy twangy cowboy mode that was Lee's greatest contribution to Nancy – and the way the album's set up, it's almost more ... LP, Vinyl record album

Early in the Morning
Argo, 1960. Very Good
An excellent early album by one of the greatest jazz vocalists of all time! Stereocraft, 1960. Very Good-

Leon Thomas takes his vocals to new heights – moving past the straight spiritual jazz modes of his work with Pharoah Sanders, to embrace a whole host of new styles too! Fantastic stuff, and proof that Rosemary Clooney was always one heck of a great singer – with strengths in jazz that you didn't always hear in her pop work! A genius album from the Four Freshmen – one that reinvents their older harmony sound for the Sunshine generation!
