One of the most memorable Esquivel albums, and perhaps the first record that really let him hit his fantastic mix of off-beat orchestrations and spacey electronicized production! The arrangements are splendid, with echoey piano lines in the front that seem to trail off into the stratosphere. Behind them, the orchestra swings in a tight rocket-fueled way, soaring and dipping to match the oddly arranged piano lines. Titles include "Playfully", "That Old Black Magic", "Speak Low", "It Had To Be You", and "Night & Day". Plus, the cover's got a groovily attired model, hanging out in a very green lunar scene! (Living stereo pressing! Vinyl is great – and cover is nice overall, but has some light traces of old shrinkwrap.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Strings Aflame
RCA, 1959. Near Mint-
Despite the "strings" in the title, this one actually swings quite well, and has a bit of an exotic gypsy flavor to it, augmented by cool spacey production that makes the strings hum with a strange other-worldly tonality. The set's filled with the usual crazy Esquivel arrangements, and ... LP, Vinyl record album

Dynamica
RCA, 1961. Near Mint-
A sweet little Stereo Action set from Ray Martin, recorded with a very dynamic edge – hence the title! The feel here is a bit in the Esquivel mode – with orchestrations that swing all over the map, and use the stereo recording technology to their best advantage. And although Ray's ... Mancini '67
RCA, 1967. Very Good+
Henry Mancini in 1967 – a time when he was definitely at the height of his powers, as you'll hear on this sweet set of big band recordings! The format here is much more jazz-based than some of Hank's soundtracks from the time – played with a great group of west coast musicians who ... LP, Vinyl record album

Soul Searchin'
RCA, 1965. Near Mint-
Claus Ogerman lays down some groovy soul instrumentals, with a nice pop feel, in the best tradition of his other great instrumental LPs for RCA. One of Al Hirt's grooviest records – and a set that definitely lives up to the "soul" in the title! The album's always in demand for the excellent sample cut "Harlem Hendoo", but it certainly isn't a one tracker – thanks to composer Paul Griffin and arranger Teacho ... LP, Vinyl record album

The Latin sound is a groovy sound too – thanks to some great arrangements from the legendary Henry Mancini! The album's less a straight Latin date than it is a new approach to the grooves Mancini was laying down on his 60s soundtracks – a mix of bossa and cha cha-inspired themes that ...
