Brilliant work from Jason Stein – a Chicago player who's been making some mighty waves on the avant scene of late, and who really comes into his own with this album! Stein's part of the new generation of avant Chicagoans – players who have a strong knowledge of free jazz, but also opt for a bit more structure and swing too – the kind of modernism that emerged best at the cusp of the 60s, in the generation of Mingus, Dolphy, and Ornette! Stein plays bass clarinet here, and there's definitely a Dolphy vibe to the music – great long solo lines, stretched out and searching, but also still swinging too – thanks to these nicely-blocked rhythms from Josh Abrams on bass and Frank Rosaly on drums. Keefe Jackson also plays some mean tenor – and titles include "Laced Case", "Background Music", "Little Big Horse", "Hatoolie", "Gallop's Gallop", "Work", "Lennie Bird", and "Badlands". Another great one from the new generation of Delmark!  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Folklords
Delmark, 2014. New Copy
One of the trippiest albums we've heard from Delmark in recent years – a really creative session from bassist Jason Ajemian, and one that links the label's avant jazz work to some of the deeper sides of Chicago's indie scene! Ajemian is free to work without any sense of genre or convention ... CD

Maybe the greatest work we've heard so far from Chicago bassist Jason Roebke – a key player on so many sessions for other jazzmen in recent years, but a hell of a visionary leader on his own! Roebke composed all new material for the record – and the set's performed by an octet that's ... CD

What It Is
Delmark, 2013. New Copy
One of the freshest albums in years from Chicago percussion legend Kahil El'Zabar – the recording debut of a great little combo he's been heading for the past few years – and a group who would have been right at home during the more progressive 60s years at Blue Note! The sound here is ... CD

Groove Awakening
Delmark, 2013. New Copy
The great Ari Brown, in wonderful form – hardly a player who needs any awakening at all, since he's been working strongly on the Chicago scene since the 70s! Ari's done famous work with his group The Awakening, Ramsey Lewis, and other bigger names – but we've really grown to love his ... CD

The most amazing record to date from Rob Mazurek's Exploding Star Orchestra – just the kind of cosmic, spiritual session you'd expect from the group's name – perfectly placed in a Chicago lineage that includes Sun Ra's Arkestra and the best years of the AACM! The group's got all the ... CD

One of the most amazing players to ever pick up the vibes – an artist with the sort of boundless creativity that Walt Dickerson and Bobby Hutcherson brought to the instrument in the 60s! Jason Adasiewicz has an amazing ear for both sound and music – and manages to balance the two ... CD

Delmark, 2013. New Copy
Maybe the trippiest album we've ever heard from guitarist Fareed Haque – but you've probably already guessed that from the image on the cover! The set's filled with all the kind of cool sounds you'd expect – and is almost a throwback to the great run of jazz-meets Eastern-meets funk ... CD

Delmark, 2013. New Copy
One of the coolest combos working in Chicago these days – a trad jazz group with a really wonderful sound – one of the few modern groups who can really illustrate the improvisational excitement of jazz back in the Windy City scene of the 20s and 30s! These guys have a freshness that ... CD

Verve/Higher Plane, 1970. New Copy
Excellent early 70s work from jazz guitarist Gabor Szabo – a super-dope album that's one of the best he ever recorded! Part of the success of the record has to do with the presence of Bobby Womack – normally a soul singer, but also a heck of a guitarist, playing here alongside Szabo in ... CD

One of the best later moments from the great Stan Getz – a set we might even place on the same level as his 60s work for Verve – and certainly at the same par as his records in the 70s for Columbia! Yet this set is quite different than that latter batch – as it has Getz really ... CD

Guitarist Jim Hall is a player who's always realized he sounds best in a small, intimate setting – whether in his 50s trio recordings with Jimmy Giuffre, or his 60s classics with Bill Hall, or his 70s experiments with bassist Ron Carter – and this live date for Concord really revives ... CD

A real gem from guitarist Larry Carlton – a set that's very jazzy, but which also shows the strong focus he'd developed on his rock session work in the 70s – including some famous recordings with Steely Dan! There's a sharpness to Carlton's guitar that cuts through some of the sleepier ... CD
