Bill Barron Compilation

A strange title, but a great little record – one that's not really a compilation of Bill Barron's music, but a document of rare performances from the 80s! The music here appears for the first time ever – all of it recorded at Wesleyan University, where Barron was teaching at the time – and played in a flowing, open-ended way that's quite different than his Muse Records sessions from the same period! Players include Fred Simmons on piano, Bill Lowe on trombone, Wes Brown on bass, and Ed Blackwell on drums – plus some great guest vibes on one track from Jay Hoggard. The tracks are quite long throughout – really opening up at a level that's a great reminder of Bill's ability to continually create over the course of a solo. The set begins with a particularly haunting spontaneous composition – "Waiting For You" – and other tracks include "Going Forth", "Blues In B Flat Minor", "Giant Steps", and "My Funny Valentine". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
