Chuck Brown and his Soul Searchers group are past the arch jazzy funk of their days on Sussex Records – and they're heading more towards that ensemble sound that would drive the DC Go Go scene in the early 80s. The formula is heard to best effect on the big hit "Bustin Loose", an old school party funk jam that you'll probably recognize immediately – and which put Chuck and the group firmly back on the map for another few years! The group also does a pretty good remake of "If It Ain't Funky", which was on one of the earlier Soul Searchets albums – and the album includes the original cuts "Gotcha Now" and "Game Seven".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Reality
Polydor, 1975. Very Good+
One of the last great albums from James Brown! Not as totally sublime as Payback or some of the others from the 70s – but James is still working here with Fred Wesley and Dave Matthews – and many of the cuts retain the funk of a few years past. Case in point is the sublime "Funky ... LP, Vinyl record album

Tamla, 1974. Very Good+ Gatefold
A bit smoother and more focused than some of Stevie's earlier work from the 70s – perhaps because he'd been having some chart success with his slicker numbers, but still a pretty groundbreaking batch of grooves that must have been awesome to hear when it first came out! Unity
United Artists, 1980. Very Good+
Obscure modern soul album on United Artists, with a strong sound that's heading towards an 80s groove, but which also has elements of Luther's work during the late 70s. The group features two male and one female singer – and the overally vocal approach is solos on the verses, and harmony on ... LP, Vinyl record album

Motown, 1960s. Very Good+ 2LP Gatefold
The Marvelettes were one of Motown's first successful acts – and given their strong run during the 60s, they also proved to be one of the label's most consistent! This 2LP set is loaded with excellent material by the group – and titles include "Please Mr Postman", "Playbo ... LP, Vinyl record album

I Want You
A&M, 1981. Very Good+
An early 80s gem from Booker T – and continuing proof that he made some mighty nice music after he split from the MGs! This set's got Book grooving in a sweet Cali mode all the way through – a vibe that's warm, yet never sleepy at all – and blended with just the right touches of ... LP, Vinyl record album

Cadet, Early 70s. Very Good+
Excellent stuff – even better than the first volume! By this point in their career, The Dells were pushing past their earlier sound, into a baroque harmony approach that was beyond compare – and which still stands today as some of the finest soul to ever come out of Chicago. The tracks ... LP, Vinyl record album

Best Of James Brown
Polydor, 1960s/1970s. Very Good+
A nice package that covers a good range of King-era material – from early R&B soul numbers, to late 60s early funk tracks. Titles include "Say It Loud", "Sex Machine", "There Was A Time", "Lost Someone", "It's A Man's World", "Popcorn ... LP, Vinyl record album
