Aretha Franklin — Live At Fillmore West ... CD 4.99

A completely cooking little live set from Aretha Franklin – and a crowning moment not just in her career, but for Atlantic Records soul in general! Aretha's working here before a very enthusiastic crossover crowd at the Fillmore West in San Francisco – getting tight backing from the combo of King Curtis (Memphis Horns, Billy Preston, and Pretty Purdie in tow!) – and hitting a groove that's often rawer, grittier, and more deep-soul tuned than some of her studio sides from the time! The recording quality is totally great – and goes out of its way to preserve the presence of the audience, and showcase Aretha's own interaction and strong sense of personality. Ray Charles makes a surprising guest appearance on one track, but the whole show is really Franklin's own – a majestic little live date that features the tunes "Spirit In The Dark", "Respect", "Make It With You", "Don't Play That Song", "Dr Feelgood", and "Love The One You're With". (Cover has wear & a mark from price sticker removal.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

2nd pressing of Aretha's first album for Columbia! Aretha sings hard jazz tracks with Ray Bryant and his combo, and although the album doesn't have the deep southern feel of her early Atlantic sessions, it's got a beautiful jazzy tinge that you don't really hear in her other recordings. Live & Lively
Atlantic, 1968. Very Good
A tasty live set, with a smoking raw groove that you don't always get on Joe's studio albums! The crowd really goes wild for Joe – and with only some small group backing behind him, he's got nothing left to do but go over the top with his vocals! As proof of that, the record includes the ... A sweet 70s classic from Roberta Flack – recorded with a mellow jazzy undercurrent that really fits the spirit of the title! The set's a bit more varied in moods than some of Flack's previous Atlantic efforts – showing a stretching of wings from Roberta, but still very much in some ... LP, Vinyl record album

Atlantic, 1972. Very Good+
Wicked electric funk from Young Holt Unlimited – and a real departure from the sound of their 60s albums, and a step into a groove that's very 70s-styled overall! The album's heavy on Fender Rhodes – played not just by group member Ken Chaney, but also by a young Bobby Lyle – ... LP, Vinyl record album

If you need to own one album by Average White Band, this is it! The album features the band at their funky best – playing hard and chopping away with a strong crossover sound that put them firmly on the map during the early 70s. Loads of tight rolling basslines and hard drums – all ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of Kelly's last records of the 70s – a bit smoother than some of his earlier work, but still quite strong overall, with some excellent vocals on most tracks. Gene Page handled the arrangements and production – and he gives Kelly some nice backgrounds to work with, ones that have a ... LP, Vinyl record album
