Brilliant work from Carmen Lundy – one of her most ambitious albums ever, and one of her best as well! The live date has Carmen working with a bigger group than usual, but one that always keeps the solidly soulful styles of her studio sets – a rich groove that grabs us from the get-go, with rhythms that are often a fair bit stronger than most other jazz singers, especially in Lundy's generation. All tunes are originals composed and arranged by Carmen, and they're played by musicians who include Robert Glasper on piano and keyboards, Curtis Lundy on bass, Phil Upchurch on guitar, Marvin Smitty Smith on drums, Steve Turre on trombone, Mark Shim on tenor, and Bobby Watson on alto sax. There's a string quartet backing the group up on a few numbers, but in a very balanced way that adds in some subtle sophistication to Lundy's already-mature music. Titles include "Send Me Somebody To Love", "Walking Code Blue", "In Living Color", "Afrasia", "Better Days", "Where'd It Go", "In Love Again", "Long Journey Home", "All Day All Night", and "Old Friend". CD also features 3 bonus tracks – "live monitor mixes" of "Firefly", "Vu Ja De", and "Good Morning Kiss". (Digipack has a cutout hole.) © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.
