CD (Item 17272) RCA (Spain), 1954 -- Condition: New Copy

Trumpeter Dick Collins plays with a "runaway herd" of saxophonists culled from the band of his boss, Woody Herman -- a really great lineup that features Al Cohn on tenor, Med Flory on alto, Jack Nimitz on baritone, and Bill Perkins on flute and tenor too! The blend of reeds is totally great -- often used tightly to offset Collins' trumpet solos in the lead -- well-blown and economical, but allowing for a bit of solo space at points for the reed players too. Rhythm is by Nat Pierce on piano, Red Kelly on bass, and Chuck Flores on drums -- and the album's got a surprisingly easygoing feel at times, more so than other RCA dates of this type. Titles include "Angel Eyes", "Why Was I Born", "Tricky Dick", "No Soap", "Very Shifty", and "The Long Night".  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
