Denys Wortman's New York – Portrait Of The City In The 30s & 40s
Book (Item 594924) Drawn & Quarterly, 2010 — Condition: New Copy
Lost images from cartoonist Denys Wortman – great enough on their own, but even more valuable as a portrait of New York City in the 30s and 40s! Wortman's images have a simple, everyday quality – little snapshots of life in the city that are often used as the basis for a gag cartoon – but with humor that's very subtle, such that the pictures come across more as observations of the city at large than just simple jokes. Wortman's got a wide eye for a variety of subjects – from the uptown elite to the downtown working class – and his rendering is often detailed, but with a loose hand, which makes for some wonderfully impressionistic moments. 284 pages, black and white, softcover. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
