Hi Fly
CD (Item 389754) Spotlite (UK), 1984 — Condition: New Copy
Sublime work from British altoist Peter King – a vastly under-acknowledged genius on his instrument who probably languished in the public eye because he was recording a decade or two too late for greater jazz fame! King's got a nicely biting approach to his reed that we really like a lot – a style that's possibly informed by Phil Woods, but which also has some of the soulful fluidity of 60s Argo sessions by Lou Donaldson and Sonny Stitt (those records, of course, where Stitt's playing alto.) The setting here is spare and simple – backing from the trio of Philippe Briand on drums, Pete Jacobsen on piano, and Ricardo Del Fra on bass – but King really stretches out beautifully on his solos, arcing and turning majestically in long lines that are as complicated as they are confident. The title track is an extended reading of "Hi Fly", done with some great added congas at the bottom – and other tracks include "Seven Steps To Heaven", "Blues For SJ", "Star Eyes", and "Old Folks". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
