My Man – Tribute To Sidney Bechet
CD (Item 485234) Impro (France), 1981 — Condition: New Copy
Leave it to Archie Shepp to deliver a tribute to Sidney Bechet with amazing results – a deeply spiritual session that's quite different than the trad jazz outing you might expect! Sure, a few of the tunes are Sidney's – but Shepp's renditions here are completely unique – stretched out and soulful, with the same sort of rich sounds you'd expect from his late 70s European work – a touch of jazz traditionalism, but mixed with all the openly-expressive modes that Archie helped bring to jazz from the 60s onwards. Shepp plays soprano sax, flute, and a bit of piano – and other players on the date include Charles McGee on trumpet, Charles Eubanks on piano, Santi DeBriano on bass, and John Betsch on drums. Michelle Wiley sings on two great numbers – "My Man" and "Blues For Bechet", both done with that all-soul Shepp approach – and other titles include "Premier Bal", "Passport To Paradise", and "Petite Fleur". © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
