A key bit of jazz funk from trumpeter Tom Browne – still grooving strong here, with a sublime mix of modern soul, funky jazz, and some of the 80s groove touches that showed up on the best GRP titles from the time! The album's got a smooth compressed groove – kind of post-Donald Byrd, with Tom taking solos over the top of most tracks, and occasional vocals , wither from a backing group, or an assortment of different lead singers. Players on the set include Bernard Wright, Dave Grusin, Bobby Broom, and Marcus Miller – and tracks include "I Know", "Midnight Interlude", "Let's Dance", "Night Wind", "Making Plans", "Thighs Hihg", and "Magic". (Includes the printed inner sleeve. Cover has a cutout notch.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Slammin soundtrack to this bio-pic which starred Sal Mineo as Gene Krupa, and which features music by Krupa himself, plus Anita O'Day and Red Nichols. Pretty trad and swing all around – but there's a lot of great drum work by Krupa, particularly the type that often got featured in the live ... LP, Vinyl record album
While My Lady Sleeps
RCA, 1957. Very Good
A rare "with orchestra" outing from pianist Phineas Newborn – one that has his gentle keys out front of larger backings by Dennis Farnon – all cast in the kind of dreamy mode you might expect from the title! Yet while the whole thing's certainly got a late night feel, Newborn' ... LP, Vinyl record album

Herbie Mann got a standing ovation for this performance – at least if the title is to be believed – and considering the grooves on the set, it was all for very good reason! Searing live work from Gato Barbieri – a brilliant little album that follows on the spirit of his other Latin America sessions for Impulse! English Jazz

Some of the earliest work as a leader from the swinging Johnny Keating – one of England's finest jazz arrangers of the 50s, working here in a looser style than on his classic Keating Sound albums from the 60s! The groove here is more small combo swinging – and Keating's working with a ... LP, Vinyl record album

Hi Records, 1975. Very Good
Heavenly soul doesn't get any more heavenly than this! Al's at the height of his powers here, and even though there aren't as many hits on the record, it's still got plenty of nice moments, and the usual stone cold Hi Records soul groove that works beautifully with Green's warmly compressed vocals. ...
