Brilliant work – and one of the rare few albums to feature the genius alto of Sonny Simmons from the 60s! The session has the fierceness of other ESP sessions from the time, but it's also tempered with a bit of spiritualism, too – somewhat more introspective in the heavy moments than other albums on the label, due in part to Simmons' personal style of playing, and the presence of John Hicks on piano and Barbara Donald on trumpet – put together in a way that's almost a bridge between the ESP and Impulse Records scenes of the 60s, with perhaps a nod towards the direction the jazz underground would take in the 70s! Other players include Teddy Smith on bass and Marvin Pattillo on drums – and tracks include "City of David", "Metamorphosis", and "Interplanetary Travelers".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Left Alone
Bethlehem, 1959. New Copy
A beautiful album by Mal Waldron – recorded in 1960, after the passing of Billie Holiday, and a very loving tribute by Waldron, who was her accompanist for a number of years. The set moves way past the usual "Holiday songbook" mode, and features instead a dark batch of tracks, two ... CD

Historically Speaking
Bethlehem, 1956. New Copy
The album's a bit less "historical" than you might guess from the title – at least at the time it was issued in the mid 50s! The material is from Chicago sessions recorded in 1956 – unusual non-Columbia material for the period, featuring the Ellington group working in a ... CD

Bethlehem, 1954. New Copy

One of the coolest, weirdest records ever issued on the legendary ESP label in the 60s – and an album that really sums up the East Village crossroads from which the imprint sprang! The music here is a mad melange of art rock, hippie folk, sound samples, and avant jazz – all presented ... CD

Really wonderful work from Don Pullen – solo material, and some of his most soulful sides of the 70s – done in this long-flowing style that's completely sublime! Pullen's really at his best in this format – working in a way that's very free, but never overindulgent or ... CD

The album's got a really classic-styled cover, and a classic-styled sound to match – a great Hammond/tenor vibe that's wonderfully old-school all the way through! The album was recorded live in a small Chicago club, and has the feel of a vintage Prestige records live date – with heavy ... CD
