BBC Jazz For Moderns

Temporarily Out Of Stock

Add Item to Want List
LP (Item 501901) Gearbox (UK), 1962 -- Condition: New Copy

Much-needed material from saxophonist Joe Harriott -- a hell of a player, and one whose few dates as a leader are always worth tracking down! This set was originally recorded by the BBC in 1962 -- and only gets its first issue now -- a beautiful batch of tunes that really show Harriott at the cusp of hardbop grooving and some of the modern ideas that would show up on his Free Form and Abstract albums -- both record that would be a perfect counterpart to the ideas going on here! Recording quality is wonderful -- these were the BBC studios, after all -- and the group is a rock-solid quintet that features Harriott on alto, Shake Keane on trumpet and flugelhorn, Pat Smythe on piano, Coleridge Goode on bass, and Bobby Orr on drums. Titles include two Harriott originals -- "Tonal" and "Pictures" -- plus two by Dizzy Reece -- "Shepherd's Serenade" and "Variations On Monk". (Limited edition of 500 copies -- vinyl only!)  © 1996-2009, Dusty Groove America, Inc.
