R&B/jazz organ instrumentals, played by one of the less-remembered name from the generation that included Bill Doggett and Wild Bill Davis. The set's a mix of hard wailers and standards, with a good raw groove in keeping with a King records sound. Tracks include "Joy Ride", "The House Rocker", "Sylvia's Callin", "Dumplin's", and "Love Mood". (Cover has some wear, light stains on the back, and a partially split top seam and spine.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Epic, Late 30s. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent collection of early work recorded under Johnny Hodges' name in the early years – sessions from 1938 and 1939 that were originally issued on 78s, but presented here in a classic Columbia LP! The tracks are a great assortment of small group numbers that focus on Hodges' tremendous ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke's Men – Original 1936 to 1939 Recordings
Epic, Late 30s. Very Good+ Gatefold
An excellent album that features late 30s recordings by some of Duke Ellington's most famous sidemen! The groups on most of these are fairly similar – mostly small group sessions from the larger Ellington outfit – pulled out in ways that give a strong focus on the solo talents of the ... Jazz & Romantic Places
Atlantic, 1955. Very Good-
Jazz in romantic places, but some pretty groovy ones too – a host of global destinations all referenced in the track selection for the set! Dave Pell's tenor is at the lead on most numbers, but the octet's in fine formation too – arranged by Jack Montrose, Marty Paich, Johnny Mandel, ... LP, Vinyl record album

Night Song
Verve, 1968. Very Good
A great title for this one – as the album's got a cool, laidback groove that's very much in a "night song" mode! Arrangements are by Don Sebesky – in that warm and fluid mode he was bringing to some of his best CTI sides at the time – and they push Kenny a bit more than ... LP, Vinyl record album

Prestige, 1954. Good+
Some of the best work ever from pianist Billy Taylor – and some of the earliest too! Taylor's 50s trio with Earl May and Percy Brice is augmented here by conga work by the great Candido – and this addition brings a lot of fire to the group, giving Taylor's normally safe style a harder ... Verve, 1959. Very Good
Sonny Stitt makes Oscar Peterson sit up and groove! The record's a great one, and uses the Peterson Trio as a perfect rhythm section for Sonny's confidently blown solos of the late 50s – in a way that pushes the combo past their usual safe area, and into more freewheeling territory to keep ...
