4.50 1

Plenty of unity here – a mix of older jazz modes with just a slight contemporary bent – in ways that make the combo groove like some of the best club jazz acts in recent years! The instrumentation is mostly acoustic – a tight array of saxes, piano, vibes, guitar, and plenty of percussion – augmented in spots by extra electronics, and produced by Lack Of Afro with a sound that's every bit as soulful as their own recordings – but a lot more heavy-hitting too! The added elements never seem to get in the way of the group's core energy – and if anything, they just expand it slightly, in all the right ways – as in the early years of fusion, before folks started jamming too much. Titles include "Swing Swang Swingin", "Ten Days", "One For People", "Black Pearl", "The Arrow", and "Us Six".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Unconditional Sound (Netherlands), 2014. New Copy
Funky flute, in a sweet dancefloor mode – as the work of Han Litz is remixed here by a variety of European producers! Litz has a groove that's already great on its own – a style that hearkens back to 60s and 70s jazz flute players, especially the funkier currents of the latter – ... CD

Schema (Italy), 2005. New Copy
The Latin Kick – with a jazzy groove! Gerardo Frisina's long been one of our favorite talents on the international groove underground, and like his labelmate and sometime musical partner Nicola Conte, he's got a way of crafting tracks that are awash in classic jazz touches. Frisina himself ... CD

A killer debut from an ultra-cool trio – a group that features members of Jabberloop and Immigrant's Bossa Band – and who work here in a core Japanese club jazz style that's somewhere between the work of Quasimode and Indigo Jam Unit – but a lot more stripped-down than both! Most ... CD

One of the coolest projects so far from Bruno "Patchworks" Hovart – a set that's put together as a tribute to all the spacey electronic 70s grooves from artists like Patrick Adams, Alain Goraguer, or Jean Pierre Massiera! Patchworks definitely gets the sound right for the set ... CD

One of the most amazing albums ever from Frank Foster – a totally righteous set that's light years ahead of his earlier work with the Basie Band! The format here is right up there with the best on Strata East at the time – a large-group session that's filled with some of the hippest ... CD
