Raw hip hop stripped to the basics – and the basics for Dave Dub on The Treatment include unfiltered, eccentric and darkly moody rhymes – backed by spare, ominously thumping beatcraft and production by Tape Mastah Selectah! It's pretty fascinating stuff – rhymes that can spit about rocking parties and warn of holy wars in the same breath. That balance of wit and foreboding holds throughout – not an easy thing to pull off. Like the best Stones Throw hip hop, it exists in a outer realm without coming off as self-consciously weird, it's informed by classic underground hip hop without copying anyone else's style, and last, but not least, it's timeless.
