A great set of unreleased recordings that was issued after John Coltrane's death, but which stands as an essential chapter in his groundbreaking body of work for Impulse! The album features 2 tracks recorded at the Newport Jazz fest in 1963 – both with Roy Haynes on drums, plus the usual McCoy Tyner/Jimmy Garrison lineup. One of these cuts is a very long reading of "My Favorite Things" – with a sweet loping modal groove, but soloing that is quite a bit more "out" than the famous studio version. The 3rd track on the album – "Selflessness" – was recorded in LA in 1965, and it features Raphael Don Garrett on bass clarinet, adding some nice Dolphy-esque touches. (Rainbow label pressing. Cover has some wear.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Savoy/Musidisc (France), 1958. Very Good
French issue of some of Coltrane's groundbreaking recordings for Savoy from the late 50s – recorded in the company of a super-hip sextet with Wilbur Harden on trumpet, and done in a way so that the tracks open up nice and long, in strong modal grooves that point the way towards 'Trane's later ... Ultra-hip work from pianist Keith Jarrett – a session that's filled with joy and life, and which has a lot more energy than some of his albums for ECM! Duke Ellington's drummer from the 50's leads a thunderous octet that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Sam Most on alto, and Jim Cook on tenor. Bellson's drums are out front, and he kicks the group nice and hard through tracks like "Thunderbird", "Nails", "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album

One of McDuff's fantastic Cadet LPs, and one that features the funky funky organist in a set of crazy arrangements written by him and Richard Evans.
