A brilliant album of Latiny grooves from Diz! The record takes off from the soulful/modal mood of the early 60s groups with Lalo Schifrin and Kenny Barron – and features a young Mike Longo crafting some fantastic lines on piano, stretched out over tight rhythms on electric bass and drums, with Dizzy soloing on trumpet, and James Moody adding in washes of color and emotion on alto, tenor, and flute. The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! (Rainbow label pressing. Cover has a peeled gloss finish overall and a split bottom seam, with some staining, waviness, separation, and peeling on the bottom four inches.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Perceptions
Verve, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
A swirling array of tones, colors, and sounds – written and arranged by JJ Johnson, conducted by Gunther Schuller, and with Dizzy at the helm, blowing some of his most complicated solos ever. A wicked bit of 70s funky fusion from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded with his old piano player from the 60s, Lalo Schifrin! Verve, 1957. Very Good
One of the best albums ever in Verve's classic set of recordings from the 1957 Newport Jazz Festival – a set that captures the Dizzy Gillespie group of the decade in top live formation! Ahhh . . . Diz in the 50s. What a great thing! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

Duke Ellington's drummer from the 50's leads a thunderous octet that includes Harry Edison on trumpet, Sam Most on alto, and Jim Cook on tenor. Bellson's drums are out front, and he kicks the group nice and hard through tracks like "Thunderbird", "Nails", "No More ... LP, Vinyl record album

Positive proof that JJ Johnson's one of the greatest trombone players ever – a sublime quartet session for Impulse Records, and one that features some of his most striking, stripped-down work of the 60s! A fantastic early album fromTom Scott – cut when he was still a teenager, and a record that combines some sonic adventurousness with hard bop leaning sounds!
