A brilliant album of Latiny grooves from Diz! The record takes off from the soulful/modal mood of the early 60s groups with Lalo Schifrin and Kenny Barron – and features a young Mike Longo crafting some fantastic lines on piano, stretched out over tight rhythms on electric bass and drums, with Dizzy soloing on trumpet, and James Moody adding in washes of color and emotion on alto, tenor, and flute. The best tracks are long groovers that really show the group stretching out – especially on the album's 16 minute reading of Dizzy's classic "Kush", the title track "Swing Low Sweet Chariot", and a great version of "Mas Que Nada"! (Rainbow label pressing. Cover has light wear and a few stains, with some splitting along the spine inside the gatefold.)  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Verve, 1961. Very Good+ Gatefold
A swirling array of tones, colors, and sounds – written and arranged by JJ Johnson, conducted by Gunther Schuller, and with Dizzy at the helm, blowing some of his most complicated solos ever. A wicked bit of 70s funky fusion from Dizzy Gillespie – recorded with his old piano player from the 60s, Lalo Schifrin! Lalo arranged, conducted, and plays plenty of keyboards – giving the album a wicked groove that's a bit different than some of Dizzy's other 70s work – a bit ... LP, Vinyl record album

Ahhh . . . Diz in the 50s. What a great thing! He's post bop, post cubop, but still has all the best elements of those eras – wrapped up into a more complicated Latin-tinged style that's filled with warmth, humor, and some pretty compelling grooves. This set is one of Diz's best from the ... LP, Vinyl record album

A fantastic early album fromTom Scott – cut when he was still a teenager, and a record that combines some sonic adventurousness with hard bop leaning sounds! Although often lost to the sands of time because of the small pressing/small reissue history of the sides cut for the label, Yusef Lateef's work for Impulse was certainly some of his strongest of the 60s, and it showed him moving way past the spacey mysticism of earlier albums, into a tighter vein ...
