An obscure little funky group from Detroit, one with a tight ensemble sound that's very much in the Earth Wind & Fire mode – complete with a really great horn section, plenty of bass-heavy grooves a the bottom, and a relatively spiritual feel that comes through strongly on the best tracks! There's a slight jazzy finish to some of the cuts too, a deeper sound that makes Hunt's Determination stand out strongly from their contemporaries – even some of the better-known groups of the time. And although indie, there's a real polish to the whole record – a well-conceived sound that comes off beautifully from start to finish, and which has always made this one a standout for collectors! Titles include "Loneliness", "Danceland", "Problems", "Number One Lady", "I Got My Nut", and "Where The Funk Comes From".  © 1996-2014, Dusty Groove, Inc.

Al Green Is Love
Hi Records, 1975. Very Good
Heavenly soul doesn't get any more heavenly than this! Al's at the height of his powers here, and even though there aren't as many hits on the record, it's still got plenty of nice moments, and the usual stone cold Hi Records soul groove that works beautifully with Green's warmly compressed vocals. ... Love Talk
Roxbury, 1976. Very Good
The second album by Jim Gilstrap – a singer who did an awful lot of studio work for other folks during the 70s, and who scored a minor hit with his own "Swing Your Daddy", which was on the first album. This set's a bit more far-reaching, with arrangements by Gene Page that are kind ... LP, Vinyl record album
Full Of Fire
Hi Records, 1976. Very Good
Hi Records perfection from the mighty Al Green – slightly later than some of his key early hits, but a record that shows Green still taking fire on all burners! Production is by the team of Al and Willie Mitchell – in a mode that's slightly fuller and more updated than before, but ... LP, Vinyl record album
Live & Love
Capitol, 1976. Very Good
Excellent work – and a surprisingly great album of modern soul tracks from this old Motown singer! Barrett arranged, produced, and wrote most of the tracks on this second album for Capitol – and although a few tracks have a sound that's a bit too much in the fast-dance mode, there's ... XII
Spring, 1979. Very Good
It's the group's 12th album, but they're still going strong – working in a sweet mix of bassy funk that really expands their original sound! The album's got a nice clubby feel overall – not really disco, but bumpin soul that still shows the group as a mostly funk act, but one with an ... LP, Vinyl record album
Attitudes
Liberty, 1982. Very Good
Sweet 80s groove from Brass Construction – still with Randy Muller at the helm, but with a sound that's a bit more bassy than before! Trademark Brass Construction horns still make an appearance on the set, but there's almost more focus on the keyboards – which, along with the bass, ... LP, Vinyl record album
Marc Hannibal
Philips, Late 60s. Very Good+
A lesser-known pop soul release from the late 60s, by this former member of the Harlem Globetrotters! Marc's not much of a singer – but he does have a deep voice that's a good fit for the arrangements on the album. Jimmy Bowen produced, and there's a lot of his sweetly swinging 60s pop ... A&M, 1976. Very Good+
One of the best albums ever by LTD – featuring some wonderful early vocals by Jeffery Osborne, and stellar production by the team of Larry and Fonce Mizell! The Mizell Brothers sound a lot different here than they do on their Blue Note work – more deeply soulful, with a sound that's ... LP, Vinyl record album
Cincinnati Kid
MGM, Late 60s. Very Good
This one's got a bluesy jazz approach – set by Ray Charles' version of the title theme, and followed through by Lalo's great instrumental tracks – which mix strings, soul, and just the right jazzy touches to keep things moving along with a subtle groove. Ttiles include "The ... LP, Vinyl record album
In The Hand Of The Inevitable
Acid Jazz (UK), 1995. Very Good
One of our favorite albums of the 90s – an instant-classic soul set from the James Taylor Quartet, working here at the height of their powers! James and his group hit a classic vibe that sounds somewhere in between Johnny Hammond's Gears LP and some of the other great records on Fantasy. ... LP, Vinyl record album
