A hard biting album of hip poetry from the great Sarah Webster Fabio! The title cut is a brutal attack on the free use of the word soul by black musicians – and Sarah delivers the words over spare conga backing by family member Cyril Leslie Fabio II. Cyril shows up on one other track – "Nina Giving Mr Backlash The Blues" – but most of the record features Sarah reading solo, without the musical accompaniment of her other Folkways album. The record's still a great one, though, as Sarah's voice and writing is always extremely compelling – without the cliches of some of her protest poetry contemporaries, and with an approach that's always smart and literate, yet still pretty spare and rhythmic. Titles include "Black World", "Hurt Of It All", "Bronzeville Breakthrough", and "For My People, A Jubilee". (Special limited CD – pressed up for us by the Smithsonian Folkways label.
