Scratch N' Twist – Rare & Unreleased New York Rhythm & Blues 1956 to 1962
CD (Item 391470) Night Train/Tuff City, Late 50s/Early 60s — Condition: New Copy
Rough and ready guitar work from Jimmy Spruill – an excellent player on the New York scene in the pre-funk years! Jimmy's sound here is an odd mix of blues and soul instrumental – often using weird little tricks on the guitar to trick out the sound of the tunes in a style that was years ahead of its time. There's clearly influence here from Mickey Baker and Freddie King running through Jimmy's style – but his spare and simple approach to the groove also points the way towards modes that would later be taken up more strongly in the era of the funky 45. The set features 20 tracks in all – about half of which are instrumentals by Jimmy, next to a second half that feature Jimmy with various other groups and singers. Titles include "Hard Grind", "Cut & Dried", "Raisin Hell", "Lonely Island", "Scratch N Twist", and "Slow Draggin" by Jimmy – plus "Driving Home" by Charles Walker, "The Squeeze" by Horace Cooper, "Believe Me Darling" by June Bateman, "Party Hardy" by Larry Dale, and "Little School Girl" by Jim & Bob Harrison. © 1996-2013, Dusty Groove, Inc. | |||||
